eggplant meatballs

3 Tbs olive oil

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 large onion

1 eggplant peeled and diced

1 to 2 Tbs water

1 cup fresh bread crumbs

1 cup fresh ground walnuts

1/2 cup minced fresh Italian parsley leaves

1/2 tsp fine sea salt and some pepper

1 1/2 tsp dried oregano and other seasonings

2 large eggs slightly beaten

1 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese

Heat olive oil in a large nonstick skillet or saucepan and slowly cook the garlic and onion over medium heat until golden. Add the eggplant and 1 T of the water, cover, and steam the eggplant over low heat until very soft, about 10 minutes. Add the remaining water only if the eggplant begins to stick to the skillet. Stir the eggplant occasionally while it cooks. Set the eggplant aside and let it cool.

Combine the bread crumbs, parsley, ground walnuts, salt, oregano, eggs and cheese in a large bowl. Stir in the eggplant, mix well, and let it stand for 20 minutes. Scoop small amounts of the mixture into your hands and form meatballs the size of a small egg. Bake on cookie sheet for 20 or 30 minutes or until crunchy on the outside.

NOTE: When forming the meatballs, wet your hands occasionally to prevent the mixture from sticking.

green beverage

We've been making green beverages with the VitaMixer. If you make enough for a few days it keeps well in the fridge. This one is very simple - a few handfuls of Kale and one banana and about a cup or two of water. Very tasty believe it or not - the cat does not!

goats + cheese

goat cheese truffles

from The Babbo Cookbook by Mario Batali

Serves 4 (as a plated appetizer)

Peperonata
2 Tbs extra-virgin olive oil
1 red bell pepper, cored, seeded, & cut into thin strips
1 yellow bell pepper, cored, seeded, & cut into thin strips
2 Tbs sherry vinegar
Kosher salt & freshly ground pepper, to taste

2 cups fresh goat cheese
1/4 cup ground pimenton (Spanish paprika)
1/4 cup ground fennel seeds or fennel pollen
1/4 cup poppy seeds
1 lb arugula
3 Tbs extra-virgin olive oil
1 Tbs fresh lemon juice
12 1/2-inch slices from a baguette
Best-quality extra-virgin olive oil, for drizzling

To make the peperonata: In a 12- to 14-inch saute pan, heat the 2 Tbs of olive oil over high heat until almost smoking. Add the red & yellow peppers & saute over high heat for 4 minutes, or until browned at the edges & softened. Add the sherry vinegar, salt, & pepper, reduce the heat to medium, & continue to cook for 5 to 7 minutes, or until the peppers are tender. Adjust the seasonings & set aside to cool.

Place the goat cheese in a medium bowl & season with salt & pepper. Divide the cheese into 12 portions & gently roll each portion into a ball. Roll four balls in the pimenton to completely coat, then roll four in the fennel, & four in the poppy seeds. Set aside.

Preheat the oven or broiler to 400 degrees F.

Bring 4 cups of water to a boil & set up an ice bath next to the stove. Drop the arugula in the boiling water, blanch for 10 seconds, then remove with a slotted spoon & immediately refresh in the ice bath. Remove from the ice bath, gently squeeze out the excess liquid with a paper towel or a clean dish towel, & place the arugula in a medium bowl. Toss with the 3 Tbs of olive oil, the lemon juice, salt , & pepper.

Toast the bread slices in the oven or broiler for 2 minutes, until slightly browned & crispy.

To assemble the dish, divide the arugula & peperonata among four dinner plates. Place one of each flavor of goat cheese truffle on each plate. Drizzle with the olive oil, lean 3 slices of toast up against each trio of truffles, & serve.

OK who's with me?

Did You Know?

Donuts are the second most profitable food item in the nation, second only to the potato!

The cost to prepare and finish a donut is approximately 12 cents!

This is one of those rare businesses with a universal customer base.

Just about everyone eats donuts and other associated products like coffees, espresso and teas, soft drinks, even soup.

pink is for boys!

I came upon this while looking at the DIY section of now public - i suppose it's an old argument about gender and color - but since we did have pink touch our lives in the early years in a pretty powerful way - it seems relevant now and worth discussing as the years go by.

i'm writing these ladies now: WOW - I came upon this while looking at the DIY section of now public - i suppose it's an old argument about gender and color - but since we did have pink touch our lives in the early years in a pretty powerful way - it seems relevant now and worth discussing as the years go by.
read more here >>

My son (now 12) was insistent that i buy him everything pink (power puff girls princesses etc etc) when he was small. the division between gender in the stores was amazing to me. Other parents (some not all) were appalled that I would "let him" wear for instance a t shirt with sparkly flowers - and be a princess for halloween - he was in HEAVEN let me tell you. All his friends were girls and he loved playing family. so much more to tell you - but I have to pop out now quickly.

I have been wanting to document this experience and share the story - OH and also want to quickly mention I worked at TOY COMPANIES while my son was growing up so I have an insider's perspective to how the business goes - so much to tell - but later - I promise.

good music radio sf

How to Find Good Music on San Francisco Bay Area Radio

A lot of people, especially many of my middle-aged peers, complain that there is no good music on the radio. Often this is the excuse provided by people who no longer let music into their lives in a meaningful way. Wrong! There is still exciting new music being made and there is still good music on the radio, you just need to search around a bit. The trick is to not waste your time with the commercial stations.

Here's a list of the San Francisco Bay Area's best radio stations and a weekly schedule of the best music shows. Note: there may be some good stations that I can't receive in my area and there are probably some good shows that I don't know about. By the way, many of these stations are available in streaming form on the internet. If you like my tastes and know of something good, let me know.

The San Francisco Bay Area's Best Radio Station

KPOO- 89.5 FM, www.kpoo.com
This is one of the few truly independent community stations left in the U.S. They tend towards African American music forms including rap, R&B, jazz and blues, but the station can be quite eclectic. Sometimes they ramble on way too much, but you can often catch some good music here.

KUSF- 90.3 FM, www.kusf.org
This station is run by the University of San Francisco, some type of Catholic college. In the evenings you can do "Hail Marys" with the priests but in the daytimes and late evening they play mostly alternative indy rock, punk, electronica etc. with a few good surprises.

KALX-90.7 FM, http://kalx.berkeley.edu
The U.C. Berkeley station may have the most hours of good music of any local station, fortunately they keep their mostly not-so-hot talk and news shows to a minimum. Being a college station they play mostly recent rock, electronica and rap but they can be surprisingly eclectic and often pretty tasty.

KALW-91.7 FM, www.kalw.org
This station is operated by the San Francisco Unified school District, but the only evidence of that is live coverage of Board of Education meetings. They mostly feature NPR-type programming but at night (mostly) they break out of the mold with some good local music and discussion shows.

KCSM-91.0 FM www.kcsm.org/jazz91.html
The college of San Mateo's station sticks to straight ahead jazz. They are usually pleasant and tasteful, but stuffy and bland. At least they stay away from that crappy "smooth" style fake-jazz muzak which can cause serious brain damage. If you didn't know much about jazz, KCSM would probably convince you that its a pretty drab genre. Catch the Saturday afternoon jazz shows on KPFA and you'll hear that jazz is still moving forward into innovative and exciting new directions.

KPFA-94.1 FM, www.kpfa.org
Part of the leftist Pacifica network, this station emphasizes news and public affairs programming. The quality of the news and public affairs shows ranges from excellent to pathetic. Don't expect unbiased presentations, they wear their convictions on their sleeves, which can be refreshingly honest. Music is mostly relegated to the evenings and weekends, but the programmers tend to be very knowledgeable and selective. There is a good variety of music, much of it quite avant, although they generally don't get into more youth-oriented styles.

Weekly Schedule of Highlights

Sundays
9-10pm, KPFA, 94.1 FM
Joe Frank-Not exactly music, but definitely art, this strange shows features stories and other literature, found voice recordings and music.

10am-Midnight, KALW, 91.7 FM
Music from the Hearts of Space-The name says it all. The host features spacey-ambient music that is interesting and avoids the syrupy new age crap.

Monday through Friday
10am-Noon, KPFA, 94.1 FM
Music of the World

Mondays
8:30pm-2am, KPOO, 89.5 FM
Grinder's Grooveyard-Rock and R&B Oldies that are not moldy

10pm-Midnight, KPFA, 94.1 FM
Off the Beaten Path-Breaks, Beats and Frequencies- This is one of my favorite shows, featuring ambient electonica, dub and more.

Tuesdays (actually Wednesday early AM)
Midnight-1:30 am, KPFA, 94.1 FM
No Other Radio-experimental, industrial etc.

Thursdays
8pm-9pm, KALW, 91.7 FM
Counterspin-Who's using the media this week? The only non-music show on my list. This show examines how government and corporations manipulate the mass media.

9pm-Midnight, KALW, 91.7 FM
Kumpo Beat-Contemporary music from all over Africa

Midnight-2am (actually early Friday AM) (except on the first week of the month), KPFA, 94.1 FM
Over the Edge-Receptable programming. Often featuring members of Negativland, this show blends multiple layers of sounds with listeners participating by phone. Very weird.

Saturdays
Noon-2pm, KPFA, 94.1FM
Blues by the Bay

2-4pm, KPFA, 94.1 FM
Forms and Feelings-jazz on the avant side

4-6pm, KPFA, 94.1 FM
In your Ear-Jazz and Latin

8pm-Midnight, KALW, 91.7 FM
Tangents-genre bending radio-Another of my favorite shows
